New home and job

Friday, September 30th, 2005

In Second Life a friend of mine gave me a place to rent for only $300pm which is also larger than the last place I was renting. The bungalow I had previously was $360pm so that’s a great saving there. The new home is a Japanese Dojo house which looks quite nice and only takes up 17 prims so I still have my 100 prim limit which is the same as the bungalow in Cub.

I’ve just started a new job hosting "Jacks or Better". It’s mostly like Poker but (as the names suggests) you need a pair of Jacks or higher to get a score. It’s a multiplayer game and everyone puts money into the ‘pot’ at the start of the game. The winner takes all. My job is to announce the scores during the game as everyone is too busy matching cards to know what their score is and whom is in the lead. I add a fun commentary all the while and keep them entertained. I’ve been accused of being TOO interesting and people have to try hard to concentrate on the game and not read my funny chat emoticon They seem to appreciate it, though and told me usually the games are pretty ‘ho-hum’ and quiet and that it’s great to be entertained while they play. Last Wednesday night I received two ‘tips’ of $50 each so I’m pretty damn happy about that. I get paid enough to pay my rent and have some left over to spend on purchases or my own creations. In Second Life you have to pay to upload sounds (wav) and textures (tga) so having a job really helps. There is a weekly auto payment for logging on but $50 doesn’t go far hehe.

I was going to give up creating stuff as I’ve not sold a thing but I received some encouragement. They said not to give up yet and keep going. I just need to find a spot in a popular mall to market my things. It’s a bit of a catch 22. I need money to rent the space but I won’t make lots of money for selling stuff until I rent a space. I might concentrate more on clothing and avatar attachments (hair, jewellery, etc) as someone pointed out "Everyone has an avatar but not everyone has a home to put furniture and the like". Makes sense and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. Everyone seems to like bling so perhaps I should give that a go.

I took my friend Emily along to a place where someone has made AI fish. They have put in the ability to produce offspring with some dna properties along with the ability to ’shoal’ and hunt for food. The more successful they are at hunting for food, the greedier they become and can pass this on to their offspring as a ‘greed’ property. The greedier they are the faster they are as well, so that gets passed on too. The slower fish cannot get to the food in time and tend to die out. They also have the ability to avoid predators which one or two have been added. There’s a few different types of feeders, each of a different colour. The fish’s tail will change colour depending on which type of food they like and are seeking. It’s quite an interesting experiment. I sat on one of the fish and was taken along for a ride while it swam around. Quite funny emoticon

Media PC and stuff

Friday, September 30th, 2005

I found one problem with our media center pc. It has trouble decoding XviD properly. The CPU can’t decompress the data fast enough to watch. It has no problem with the sound as it continues flawlessly but the images quickly become out of sync with the sound and eventually stops. Then it catches up and they are both in sync for another minute or so. It is only a Celeron 433 after all, so I should not expect too much. I might have to upgrade it if I want to watch any XviD stuff on there. The TV software is crashing from time to time as well and has to be started 4-5 times before it actually works properly.

Not much news happening tho. Just the usual stuff.

Blake’s school has started swimming lessons so we have to drop his Saturday lessons as we can’t afford both. The school lessons are also about a third the cost of the swimming school charges and is mandatory so we can’t pick and choose. At least he will have his classmates and other friends to swim with.

Not German Measles

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

What a fun day.. This morning Sienna came out with blotchy red rashes all over her arms, back, stomach, legs.. everywhere.

I took her to the GP whom said "Maybe its a viral rash or an allergy, but go to the hospital anyway" so I took her to the private hospital. $168 later he tells me it’s most likely a virus causing the rash and she never did have German Measles at all. Nothing can be done other than keep an eye on her and it should go away by itself. He even wondered if it was slapcheek (I think I suggested that one to Bec when it first happened).

Anyway we came home for lunch at 2:30pm!! Ack. When we went to see the GP at the medical centre they somehow dropped Sienna from the list of people to see the doctor so when I asked what had happened they said "Oh! Yeah. She was supposed to have gone in already but I got someone else instead".

I picked up my Cortisone nasal spray today. The chemist took 15 minutes to work out some old lady’s medicine’s cash register code to type in so we had to stand around waiting while four employees of the chemist all tried to work it out together. Three old ladies (including the pharmicist) and another younger woman whom looked to be on her "L Plates".

Not many allergies

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

I went to the doctor this morning to find out about my blood and CT scan tests.

I said I was told the results would take 48 hours but I had not been notified. They said "We don’t ring you when they come in. You have to ring us and find out when they have arrived then book another appointment". *Sigh*

So I sat there for 45 minutes until the one doctor working today was available.

He said my sinuses weren’t closed too much, so that was good. I told him they mostly close up at night.

He checked my blood test for allergies and it said the only thing I’m a little allergic to is house dust mites. Not wheat or milk or cat dander or any of that stuff.

So, at least we get to keep the cat which I guess is a good thing. At least Bec and the kids will be happy about that.

He did prescribe me a cortosone nasal spray which I will have to pick up from the chemist tomorrow. He said it will take about a week to really take effect but since I’d not had it before it should work quite well. I might take it tomorrow night a couple of hours before bedtime to give it time to start working. I’d prefer it to be most effective during nights as that’s when I have the most trouble breathing. At least during the day I can breathe through my mouth and blow my nose when it’s blocked.

Crazy is as crazy does, Sir.

Ethanol and the Govt

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

At least now we can see why Johnny Howard decided not to introduce a big fuel levy or investigate fuel prices too thoroughly. He’s going to let service stations put up to 10% ethanol into fuel mixes and not tell anyone or make it less worrying even "despite manufacturers’ fears of damage to some car engines". That will be a huge help for his mates in the sugar industry.. who was it? Manildra ? Yes, it was.

We know from previous times that the owner of Manildra is a great mate of little Johnny so I can see where finally having a real reason to put his Ethanol into fuel mixes is a far preferable solution than helping out consumers by capping fuel prices or levying them.

The Manildra Group, which had developed in the 1960s as a grains processing company, first began producing ethanol in 1992 as a waste product of its manufacture of industrial starch. The company now produces 87 percent of all Australian ethanol, and supplies its own ethanol-petrol fuel blend to independent petrol stations.

Manildra Group chairman Dick Honan is one of Australia’s wealthiest individuals, with an estimated personal fortune of $272 million and close personal ties to senior figures in the Howard government.

Australia’s largest ethanol producer is the Manildra Group, a grain-business giant. Since 1992 it has produced ethanol from the waste stream of its factory at Bomaderry, near Nowra on the NSW south coast. The factory’s prime role is to extract starch, gluten, and other useful products from wheat. About two-thirds of the 60-million litres of ethanol produced by Manildra each year is blended with petrol.

When, last October, the Sydney Morning Herald commissioned an analysis of petrol sold by nine independent outlets in the Sydney’s south and south west, it found samples from three contained more than 20 percent ethanol, and three others more than 10 percent. Most of the six retailers were reportedly unwilling to comment to the SMH, but two named Manildra as their supplier.

Above 10 percent ethanol, you enter the danger zone. Ethanol is both corrosive and a solvent. It eats away at fuel lines and fuel-delivery-system components. It can also loosen gunk in fuel lines, leading to blockages, and in older engines - especially those with carburettors - lead to cold-start problems and misfiring.

Keep it at 10 percent and the vehicle manufacturers are reasonably happy, although you’ll get slightly decreased fuel economy. On top of this, ethanol’s environmental credentials turn out to be rather dubious. Theoretically, ethanol should burn a little cleaner than petrol and generate less carbon dioxide. The reality, according to CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), is that the differences in tailpipe hydrocarbon emissions between premium unleaded and premium unleaded with the 10 percent ethanol are negligible.

The same CSIRO study also found that the carbon-dioxide emissions are marginally lower. But what the study didn’t say is that these tailpipe gains are potentially offset by the high CO2 penalty levied in growing the grain or sugar to make the ethanol.

A 2001 study by Cornell University in the US found that growing an acre of corn for conversion to ethanol required 529 litres of fossil fuels. Similar studies on the energy consumption of the sugar-to-ethanol process haven’t been done. The same Cornell study, again based on corn conversion, found that 70 percent more energy is needed to produce 3.8 litres (1 US gallon) of ethanol than is contained in the ethanol itself.

Put it all together and there aren’t many good reasons for adding it to petrol. Car manufacturers aren’t keen on it, even though they are reluctant to go on record saying it, while the environmental costs appear much higher than the sugar-cane growers, ethanol producers, and both groups’ supporters in parliament will own up to.

Nostalgia

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

I’ve been looking through the web archive today at some sites I used to work on or used.

Planet Access Internet Cafe - The first website I ever worked on!!

AlchemyWeb - My old ‘web design’ hobby company.

Com-Cen - An ISP I worked at many years ago.. now in trouble for mp3 hosting.

Crafti Internet Connexions - An ISP I helped set up before the manager went weird and wouldn’t pay us (even tho we did all tech support from home 24/7 Yes! 24 hours a day 7 days a week on a few phone lines. We did tech support for three different ISPs from home).

Pharmacy Department of University of Sydney - I worked here for a while.. one of the best jobs I had. Pity they cut the pay level down before I joined so I could not afford to stay there permanently. When I left it went back up about 3 levels.

Medication Review - I created this website for some of the teachers at USyd’s Pharmace Dept

Top Technicians - A website I designed for the film crew company in Sydney.

KoN - A guild I was in a long time ago.

Tavvish McTavvish - An old Everquest character of mine.

Might post some more if I find or remember them.

In other news, I’ve just found out this page is in BlogShares ….
