Mil’s Hallowe’en party

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

I tried out the Navman S50 on the way to Mil’s Hallowe’en party last night and it took me in a direction I would not have driven, but it turned out to be quite fast due to following Motorways. It would be interesting to see if the device would take you that way during peak hours (it can distinguish between daytime and nighttime).

I dressed up as GI Joe since the theme was "Babes in Toyland". Funnily enough, even though Mil and I had no idea what costumes the other was wearing, she was dressed in army fatigues as well haha.  Although, there was another guy dressed as a plastic toy soldier.. complete with green face makeup to make him look plastic and big plastic feet like a real plastic soldier.. with the middle split so he could walk. They had a competition for best costumes. The plastic soldier won one of them. A girl won because she was dressed up as a pig.. (ie ‘Babe - the pig - in Toyland’ heh.).

They had a pinata (which I suggested they get but my idea was to fill it with liquer chocolates *Grin*). Half a dozen or so people tried belting it with a broomstick (with the broom brush still attached) and had no luck. I grabbed the pole and hit it once without any damage, the same as the others, then took a huge swing and smacked the damn thing off the clothes line. It landed on the ground and I whacked the hell out of it, picked it up and ran off into the crowd.  I took it to where my friends were sitting and we proceeded to destroy it completely. The only problem is none of us eat lollies lol! So we picked them up as best as we could in the dark and piled them on a nearby table for the others to sort through.

We had a great time and Mil’s boyfriend Jason seemed to as well since he was really drunk and talking in a fake Irish accent which sounded more Pikey to me. At least he was having fun.  He was dressed in a skirt with a blouse and stockings and a blonde wig. We weren’t sure exactly what he was supposed to be, but it didn’t really seem to matter.. especially when he flashed us hehe. Raphael lived not too far away but he brought $25 for cab fare and it cost $14 to drive him there.  I thought it should be must less, but he didn’t have enough to get home so we offered a lift. After Mil took a bunch of photos I jumped into my car, programmed the S50 and drove off to drop off Raph and then head back to my place.

How ubergeek can you get? :) Well, it has all these handy features and I actually got good use out of it last night when I offered a friend at the Hallowe’en party a lift home. He lived in a new apartment and didn’t know how to get there from the party. So, I just typed his address into the Navman S50 and listened to the lady telling me where to drive. Sweet!

It plugs into the USB port on my computer and can download updates and Navpix  (also at Navman.com).

What is Navpix?

Navman is the world’s first image-based navigation system. Available on the Navman S50, S70, S90i, N20, N40i and N60i and the earlier iCN 700 Series. NavPix is quick and easy to use, and goes beyond just simplifying navigation. As well as finding destinations using addresses and postcodes, with NavPix, you can now navigate to pictures.

The S50 also has the ability to avoid traffic congestion. This is currently being rolled out in Melbourne but will be in other areas in the future.

The S50 connects to your Bluetooth phone to allow calling and answering via the GPSr device. It can download your phone’s phonebook and display the caller onscreen. It works as handsfree via Bluetooth so you can press a button on the touchscreen to answer calls and talk via the device. You can also dial a number from it. A great feature is the S50 not only has builtin lists of Restaurants, Theatres, Amusement parks, Cinemas, etc but the phone number of each so you can tap the screen to dial the Restaurant in the area you are driving to and book your table before you arrive.  It can receive SMS messages via your BT phone.

It’s also handy to know where speed and safety cameras are in the area you are driving to.

The weekend cometh

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

This morning Sienna and I got up early as I had to go to the RACQ Assessor to see if they will authorise the guys to give me a new front fender for my car. It’s going well and the guy was really friendly and helpful. Even gave me some advice he thought I may inquire about once the job was done. Next, we went for a drive to find a costume for me for a Hallowe’en party next Saturday night.

I am going over to Mil’s place for the party. I found my costume and it wasn’t too expensive.. just under $45. I have a couple of accessories to buy as well but that’s the main part. I will report next weekend about it since I don’t want to spoil the surprise. We drove from there to the airport as the Aviation Australia (check out that url! I’ve not heard of that TLD before!) section was having a tour day where you go through to find out careers in the Airlines, from Avoinics to Hostessing. It was rather informative but I would have got more out of it had I not had a 4yo to keep in line the whole time. She wasn’t naughty very much but kept being interruptive. I can’t really blame her as she was probably bored out of her mind. We came back home and had some lunch and Sienna had a nap. She just woke up now.

I have been putting together my old server as a Windows XP box. The old crappy Windows ME box needs a serious replacing (I can’t believe I have touched the damn computer!!!). I’ve spent the last couple of days installing XP and updates and other applications to make it as usable as possible. I have to get a new battery for it, though as it keeps losing the BIOS settings, including time and date. Will see about that tomorrow. Tomorrow I think I’ll get Sienna another dress or two.

Last weekend we got some shoes and I think it’d be nice for her to have a new dress. She is certainly looking forward to it. As for my own PC, I opened it up to take out the old 80Gb HDD to put into the other computer (since I had only an old 20Gb HDD in there) and saw my 120Gb HDD sitting in there, unconnected! I put the 80Gb’er into her new PC and hooked up the 120Gb for me to use. I’ve been thinking of what to do with it and decided I will have another look at Apple OSX86. I will create a partition for that and also another partition which I will probably make FAT32 as it’s read/writable on Windows, Apple OS & Linux. I need the lowest common denominator. I don’t think Linux/Mac do well yet with NTFS although it’s getting there.

As for Linux, I had originally installed it.  I decided to forego that and just install Windows XP when it hit me.. I should just put XP on there.
