How ubergeek can you get? :) Well, it has all these handy features and I actually got good use out of it last night when I offered a friend at the Hallowe’en party a lift home. He lived in a new apartment and didn’t know how to get there from the party. So, I just typed his address into the Navman S50 and listened to the lady telling me where to drive. Sweet!

It plugs into the USB port on my computer and can download updates and Navpix  (also at Navman.com).

What is Navpix?

Navman is the world’s first image-based navigation system. Available on the Navman S50, S70, S90i, N20, N40i and N60i and the earlier iCN 700 Series. NavPix is quick and easy to use, and goes beyond just simplifying navigation. As well as finding destinations using addresses and postcodes, with NavPix, you can now navigate to pictures.

The S50 also has the ability to avoid traffic congestion. This is currently being rolled out in Melbourne but will be in other areas in the future.

The S50 connects to your Bluetooth phone to allow calling and answering via the GPSr device. It can download your phone’s phonebook and display the caller onscreen. It works as handsfree via Bluetooth so you can press a button on the touchscreen to answer calls and talk via the device. You can also dial a number from it. A great feature is the S50 not only has builtin lists of Restaurants, Theatres, Amusement parks, Cinemas, etc but the phone number of each so you can tap the screen to dial the Restaurant in the area you are driving to and book your table before you arrive.  It can receive SMS messages via your BT phone.

It’s also handy to know where speed and safety cameras are in the area you are driving to.
