Installed Twitter Blog WordPress plugin

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I just noticed that my blog posts were not being Tweeted to my Twitter account.  I had a search around and found a really neat WordPress plugin called “Twitter Blog“.

Current Features

  • Tweets about your blog post on posting
  • Creates a bit.ly link when your blog post is tweeted and adds it to your bit.ly link history
  • Checks for replies to the tweet hourly and converts them to comments
  • Direct Message is sent to the user notifying them their tweet has been added to your blog post
  • Comment will be moderated and administrator will be notified according to system settings.
  • Customizable Tweet format
  • Converts tweets with #blog hashtag to a blog post. (Hashtag is customizable)
  • Allows for Start and End parts of tweet to be customized.

Future Enhancements

  • Use the Twitter user’s image for the comment image
  • Add Twitter hashtags to tweets for individual posts

I registered a Bit.ly account since I was using that to post IT News when I was going to do the Where IT’s At Show site and set up my Twitter login details for the plugin.  These features look really neat so I’m glad I found this plugin.

Movember, Allergies and Electric cars

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I went to the Allergy Specialist a couple of times and after being pincushioned I found out I’m very allergic to: Mould, Grasses and Cockroaches (eiuw!).  Since the ceiling of the place I was living in at Marrickville had a leaky hole and was mouldy and rotting I had to get out of there.  Around that time, my good friend Lord Striker’s mum died in a car accident.  He decided to move into her home, but could not without help.  Before I found out about the allergies I had offered to stay with him for a couple of weeks while he settled in.  I asked if he would like me to move in permanently, thus benefitting both of us and he agreed it’d be a grand idea. Since I’ve moved out I am no longer coughing and sneezing constantly.

We’ve spent the last week moving and settling into the new place.  Lisa helped out Saturday when I hired a ute.  We have most of our stuff moved in now and I spent all yesterday afternoon moving stuff out of my room and putting my stuff in there.  I’m really enjoying living there and feel much better all for it.  I also appreciate the company.  Striker and I get on really well.  He has some big plans for the place so we will work on them over time.

Yesterday I went to the AEVA electric vehicle show day. Striker is their webmaster and a member and he showed me around.  I got to ride in an electric Go Kart.  This thing goes about 90km/h and I put the pedal down and flew along with the wind blowing in my hair. It was a blast!

Lisa arrived after I had already left and I think she enjoyed the electric vehicles too!

A friend of mine (Briget) asked me to join her husband’s Movember group “The Techmos” and grow a moustache for Movember.  I joined their group and have since been asked by a couple of other people to join their group too.  I don’t think I’ll be able to raise much money but joined the Techmos anyway.

Road trip and Windows 7

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Last week my dad’s PC died. He phoned to say when it boots up it says “Disk Error”.  So I decided to go on a Road Trip to visit him and see what’s up.

I was going to leave at about 9am but woke at 4:45am and couldn’t get back to sleep.  I had already packed my bag the night before so I grabbed it and my other stuff and headed on to my car.  Grabbed some fuel and headed for the Mid North Coast.

I arrived at about 9am which surprised mum and dad as they expected to see me about 2pm.

I booted up dad’s computer and was greeted with the same message.  I took the Hard Drive out and plugged it into my work laptop via my IDE-TO-USB cable.  My laptop recognised the hard drive type but could not read the data and suggested formatting it.  I ran CHKDSK over it but that just generated a page full of errors.

Dad has most of their data backed up onto a couple of USB Thumb Drives I gave him and so he didn’t mind throwing out the new 200Gb HDD which had died.  My friend Jiba had loaned me an 80Gb IDE drive and said I could keep it (for the cost of a can of JB & Coke! Neat!).  I put that into dad’s PC and installed Windows 7.  It worked beautifully, so I also installed Microsoft Office for him since I’d bought that from MS last year.  I phoned my friend Brad and went to his home to activate Windows 7 and MS Office and install a couple more drivers and Antivirus.  It turned out the AV didn’t actually install, but I can do that some other time. For now, they have a wonderfully working Windows 7 PC with MS Office and are delighted it’s all working.

I took about 20 photos of their Chinchilla cat on my iPhone 3GS and plugged it into the PC and downloaded the photos to make into a Windows 7 photo slideshow screensaver.

I stayed overnight and around lunch time the next day headed back to Sydney.  It only took about 3.5 hrs to drive back so I arrived within plenty of time to go to Trivia with Lisa.  We had a fantastic time and came 2nd so won a $25 voucher for the Inn the Trivia is hosted at.

A long Mean Time Between Updates.

Sooo what’s been going on?

Well, I’ve had Sienna visit a couple of times and we’ve had fun visiting relatives and staying at my parents’ place on the Mid North Coast.  We generally leave Sydney the day/afternoon/evening her plane arrives then drive to Newcastle and stay overnight with random(relatives) and off to mum and dad’s the next day.  We spend a few days having fun and relaxing then driving back down to Sydney and I sadly watch her plane fly off again.  I do miss her so when she’s gone.  She’s not much for talking on the phone so I don’t ring a lot.

As for myself… well I’ve been visiting friends and getting out and about and enjoying myself for the first time in years.  It’s great to have such a good network of friends around to hang out with.  I’ve been to the North Rocks Computer Markets a few times, picking up a USB to IDE/SATA cable, Webcam, 1Tb Hard Drive, etc.  I’ve been to the Liverpool Markets to see my friend Striker whenever I can.  It’s a pity he works weekends so we don’t get to do a lot together, but he does come over to visit every Monday night so he, Trejkaz and I can listen to Tech Talk Radio and harass the presenters on their WebChat site.  Dr Ron is really great, putting up with us and giving back some shit himself hehe.

I’ve been trying to work out programming the iPhone. I installed the Hackint0sh as you can see in previous posts. I’ve followed tutorials but even when I copy and paste the code from them either it doesn’t compile or it does and then crashes the application on the iPhone simulator. Very frustrating.  If the code doesn’t compile, I can understand it and try to fix it, but if it does compile then tracking down the problem is much harder.  I’ve bought a few books to help me learn:  Beginning iPhone Development, iPhone Games Projects and Cocoa Programming for Mac OSX.  Hopefully, from reading them and doing the tutorials I can learn enough to get something off the ground.  I’ve registered a domain for hosting info about games and applications I will write for the iPhone. I just need to get it going and some ideas as to what I’m going to program.

I’ve recently joined a few groups: Urban Prankster, Parallel Kingdom, GeoHashing and GPS Mission.  We shall see which one(s) keep my interest.  The last three involve the use of my iPhone with PK and GPSM using Google Maps so I may have to upgrade my iPhone Data Plan as they will chew through my 150mb limit in no time!  Last night I tried a mission from GPS Mission and enjoyed it then created one of my own which I will have to test when I’m not sick.  I just noticed someone attacked me in Parallel Kingdom so will have to do something about that soon.  It could be the guy whose trees I’ve chopped down to get wood to claim land near his and shrink his land ;)

I’ve been thinking of hobbies to start up. I had initially decided on Hanggliding, but the expense is a bit much for just now. I have the money but $2,500 on a hobby is a bit much so I might pick up something cheaper. I have an idea in mind. I will just think about it for a bit first.

I’ve been tossing up whether to buy an MSI Wind U100. If my iPhone programming actually takes off this could be great as I could program anywhere.. even on holidays.. and I can certainly find uses for it at home. It makes a great Hackint0sh and would run Windows 7 beautifully.  A shop I looked at it in has a free upgrade to 2Gb RAM at the moment which would be sweet.

I’ve also joined Houseminders.  I will be able to mind homes for people when they are on holiday and look after their pets and plants, etc.  I think it should be fun and when I am doing it, having the MSI Wind will be very useful as I will be living there from 1-4 weeks or so and I can use the MSI Wind with my 3′s 3G USB internet modem to keep in contact with friends and family while also watching movies and maybe programming.  I already have one home to mind from Jan 3 to Jan 21.  The lady is going on holidays with her daughter and I’m minding the two cats.

I bought BioShock a few weeks ago and started playing it. I don’t normally play games but I thought I’d check out something and everyone raved over this game, plus since it’s getting old it was discounted to about $40 so not too expensive. It also doesn’t have ongoing fees like an MMO which would annoy me.  Speaking of MMO’s, I was resting yesterday so spent the day watching The Guild. It’s a great show!  Felicia Day is cute, too. The Asian girl is cute but rather young.
